Wall Fountains and Wall Decor – Making a House a Home

Josh and Tina were two good friends who recently got married. It wasn’t too long after they were wed that I popped in for a visit one afternoon. I was surprised to see that they were already looking at new furniture and home decoration catalogues. After all, one of the things their parents provided for them for their new home together was a complete set of furniture. I asked them what they were up to and they said that they just didn’t feel like their new house was a home. Sure, the furniture was nice, but it was just sort of sitting there. Tina pulled me aside and told me that she had seen some ideas in a few magazines lately about using wall decor to transform a house and wanted to show me a few of them they were thinking about. They both love indoor wall fountains. I had to admit I’d never seen something like this, but Tina, well, when she gets her mind set on something there just isn’t any changing it!

They had spent the better part of six weeks looking through catalogues, visiting local stores, shopping online and they both agreed on one thing – that nothing they found “fit” their personality. They wanted to be different, be on the leading edge but at the same time present a home that was inviting, relaxing and helped them both distress after a long day at the office. When Tina started talking about hanging wall fountains she said that she had seen one at a friend’s house in California and she was just shocked at how much it changed the whole room. That’s when Josh pulled out the sketch they made!

Their idea was simple, but brilliant. They wanted to create a library room complete with shelves for storing Josh’s die-cast car collection, space on the wall’s for Tina to hang fabrics she had collected through her travels around the world during her college days, and the centerpiece of it all was to be the fountain. They wanted to keep fresh flowers in this room as well, as they planned on it being the room where they brought in visitors and guests to talk with and visit with. So they decided that they would incorporate a small wall water fountain between two bookshelves that would be surrounded with fresh-cut flowers. I have to admit, it was different and I liked it!

And the water fountain let me tell you, it was beautiful and so quiet and peaceful. It really helped to create an atmosphere in the room and helped bring together all of the room decor and wall furnishing. They had pulled it off and created just a wonderful setting – I didn’t want to get up and go the dining room, but Tina just wouldn’t let me eat in there and get crumbs all over the carpet!

So what did they do that was so different? They brought together their own personalized tastes to create wall décor that set off the furniture in the room. They tried something new, the fountain, that worked out beautifully (in fact, I may have to look into getting one for myself!) and added a lot of personality to the room. The fresh-cut flowers went so well with the fountain that it was hard to tell if we were inside the house, or outside in the garden!

The best part of it all was it didn’t cost a lot. All too often we keep our walls white, our carpets tan and our homes, well, boring. We don’t add our unique touches to our environment and as a result we don’t create environments in which we can relax or unwind with friends. Josh and Tina spend very little money but transformed their home with just a few simple additions – the fabrics, the shelving and the fountain.

Why not transform your home? You not only create a relaxing environment, but you can also add to the value of the home. Just think about it, if you were looking at a home on the market to buy, would you be more impressed with some static furniture in a plain room or a room that showed character and possibility?

Josh and Tina already have their next project in mind from what I’ve been told. They want to turn the spare bedroom into a hobby room. I’m not sure how far Tina is going to let Josh go though, when he brought home the life-size cutout of a NASCAR driver the other day from what I understand it ended up out in the garage. I guess they are still working on deciding what decor works best – but I’m sure Tina will keep Josh in check – and they will have a blast doing it!
