When organizing the various pieces of a room, couches, tables, chairs, a carpet can be used to group items into areas. In larger rooms, this can be used to effectively divide the space into two separate areas, each with an independent, if reciprocating, purpose.
In smaller rooms, a carpet is a great way to add color and pattern, without taking up valuable walk room, or shelf space. In general, greater detail and color will make a smaller room seem bigger and more interesting.
Carpets are also important for setting up walk ways, and developing the flow of your home. Used in hallways they centralize passages and direct traffic. Within the confines of a space they can be used to create visual hallways, or the absence can be used to create the same effect. An example would be a living room in which everything is grouped around a central carpet, leaving passage space around the grouping for adequate flow.
The patterns and colors found within a rug are also very important. Ideally if you had an empty room, an interestingly patterned carpet could set the tone of the entire space. Then all you would have to do to decorate is to choose furnishings and colors that came from the proportions you found in the rugs pattern. No need to worry about clashing, you know the colors work, because you can see that they do in the carpet.
