Relaxing Rooms – Creating an Environment to Get Away From It All
Ok, quick question, what is your home like? No, I’m not asking how many rooms you have, or what color your bathroom walls are – I’m more interested in finding out about the environment within your home. It is warm, inviting and relaxing? Or do you walk in the front door and feel like you are walking into a sterile hospital? Stress and your quality of life have to do as much with your environment than anything. Your home is a major part of your environment that you will spend a lot of time in, and for most of us we don’t have a room we can get away from it all in – a relaxing room. In this article we’re going to look into how you can create a room where you can let the worries of the day go, whether it be a room with a model railroad collection, a change in furniture for the living room, or even installing one of many unique indoor wall water fountains in the family den. You’ll be surprised at the end how many simple ideas there are for creating that perfect environment right in your own home!
Whenever I visit a friend’s house one of the first things I notice is the ‘feel’ that the room gives the visitor. It is surprising how many people I know who have a house, but they don’t have a home! One way to change your house into a home is by creating a room in which you can get away from it all, go and relax, and just unwind.
When you are thinking about how to create a room that helps you unwind, think about how you can work in subtle changes to the décor without having to start from scratch. For many of us, we may not have a spare room we can change over, so we have to work our ideas into an existing room. Luckily, it doesn’t have to take a lot of money or effort to make small changes that can really help you transform the room into a relaxation center. Think up a color scheme you might enjoy, or even a particular style of furniture and decorations. Maybe that dining room, the one that rarely gets used because it contains just a basic table and china cabinet, could become the center of your house with the addition of some choice pieces you find from around the world, or maybe you have a corner of it you could install a small wall fountain in to give that room a warm, welcoming appearance. Perhaps you have always been interested in model railroading. If so, consider taking that spare bedroom and change it into a place where you can set up a track and decorate with railroad motif and create your special rail road hideaway.
Two of my friends who have been married for years, Rexx and Julia, recently invited my wife and me over for dinner. Rexx is a busy guy, he is a doctor and a lot of times he brings his work home with him. I asked him how he unwinds at night and he showed me to his den. There he had one of the best relaxation environments I had ever seen; a mahogany desk, a soft leather sofa and in the corner a tranquil wall water fountain.
The room wasn’t big by any means, just a place for him to do his work, but the three elements came together nicely. He told me that he often would sit on the couch in the evenings and listen to the water fall gently as he worked on files. It really helped to take the edge off his day, and clear up his mind.
So what’s your idea of relaxation? Perhaps you are a book worm, or maybe you enjoy coin collecting. Whatever it is, find a room in your house to help you relax in and design the environment in that room for that purpose. It doesn’t cost a fortune, and often you will be surprised at just how much beauty and value it can add to your house. What’s more, it can also be a welcoming center for guests that come to your house – the place where people come to sit and talk, or enjoy a few hours talking about times gone by.
