Measuring For Curtains Is A Must For Achieving Great Results

When you've moved into a new home, or are renovating your window treatments in your existing home you'll want to measure carefully to make sure that you are purchasing the right size curtains or drapes for your windows. It is important to measure all the windows in the room to ensure that there aren't slight variances that will show up later. If you know exactly what kind of curtains you'll be installing, then you only need to measure for that specific style. But, if you're shopping around to get ideas, you'll want to get several sets of dimensions so you'll be prepared, regardless of the style you select.

You may choose from a number of different types of window treatments. Some will need to extend beyond the width of the window, and higher than the upper frame. Some styles will be placed inside the frame of the window. To be well prepared it is advisable to measure both the outer dimensions and the inner ones. It is also best to use a retractable metal measuring tape for accuracy, rather than a cloth tape, which can cause you to obtain erroneous figures. If you already have existing curtain rods that you'll be using, you can measure the width of them and decide on the length based on length preferences. Generally, you'll want to figure that your curtains will need to be two to four times the width of your windows to provide for attractive fullness.

The first measurement should be the outer window frame. Measure from side to side, then from top to bottom, and you'll also want to measure from the top of the frame to the floor. It is easiest to make a diagram of the window and place your measurements alongside the sketch. Hardware should generally extend a couple of inches beyond the outer dimensions on each side. After you have your outer dimensions, measure inside the window frame to get the inner dimensions. Write them down carefully, using arrows to point out the direction of the measurement. Mixing up the measurements is one of the most common mistakes in measuring windows and can be a real disaster if you are having custom window treatments made.

After you have your exact dimensions you'll want to consider how the window treatment will be mounted. Different styles include rod pockets, top pocket tab, tie top, ring top, and pole top, just to name a few. Different types of window treatments include drapery panels, valences, tiered panels, café, and sheers. Hardware also comes in a variety of types, such as decorative rods, sconces, café rods, dauphine or continental rods, single and combination rods, holdbacks, and spring tension rods, just to name a few. Because there are some complexities involved in creating amazing window treatments, our sponsors have set up their sites to accommodate the needs of anyone seeking to dress up their windows.
